R.M. Schinder and Gregory Ain Mid-Century Duplex in the Hollywood Hills

R.M. Schindler, the Gordon House Remodel 1950

In the late 1940’s, Henrie and Don Gordon were hosting a dinner party at their home in the Hollywood Hills. Henrie was complaining to R.M. Schindler about the cracking in their plaster ceiling as city was blasting for the excavation of the new 101 freeway. Schindler took an envelope, retreated from the conversation and returned proffering a drawing of an entirely new living room. Over the next several years, Schindler would make his way through the entire house, leaving his indelible style on the Gordon’s home, transforming one room at a time.

2 years later, the Gordon’s agreed to board architect, Gregory Ain, in the other side of the house. Ain, who had been inspired to pursue architecture because of Schindler’s work, became quickly enthralled with Schindler's renovation and convinced his landlords that if they would only pay for materials, he would renovate the other half of the house for free.

Originally built as a hunting cabin for the Dodge family in 1912, this duplex contains two of the most seminal mid-century architects' work within the same building. It is a singularly unique opportunity to restore a piece of LA's architectural history.

Rarely do we host a listing with such a vibrant and memorialized history. To see more photos, check it out
